Why did the permanent hair coloring by Loreal only color my roots?

I used Loreal hair color "for dark Hair only" and it only colored my roots!! Now my hair is light brown at the top and black at the bottom. I followed the instruction.......only, they didn't say how long to leave it in. So, anyway......I'm two-toned now. What could i do to fix this?

Your roots are what stylists call 'virgin hair' It is newly grown and has never been exposed to all the elements you probably put it thru: (heat, dyes, sunlight, hair product, shampoo, etc. ect...) The virgin hair will naturally be more pourous and less blocked up with the residue all the other products have left behind over the years you have grown your hair. It absorbs it like a sponge. Next time try to buy two boxes of the same color, add the first box to the ends first, and work up to the roots. This way if you run out of dye you will have a second box to mix and finish the roots. Good luck!

Have you colored your hair before? If so, it could be that the none colored part (your roots) took in the chemicals.

Another could be that you didn't leave the chemicals in long enough. Since you probably started putting the chemical on your roots first and then working your way down to the tip of your hair. Since the top part of your hair had the chemical stay longer while you were working your way down, might be why the top part of your hair is colored and not lower half.

because your body heat comes from your head, it can sometime cause the hair to get lighter at the scalp. also if you had color on the ends (even a rinse) it will not get as light as virgin hair. next apply the color to your roots last. to fix it you should go to a professional. they will most likely go back over the ends of the hair with the brown. but they will know what level peroxide to use that will give you the color you want and not damage your hair. it's hard to say without looking at it. but don't correct it yourself because color can be very damaging...good luck
